New Classic Board Games - 5550 Wilshire Apartments

On a rainy day or family fun night, a classic board game is a great way to bond over some friendly competition. Here are some fun classic board games worth playing:

Apples to Apples
This new-classic game has led to several new editions. The original is the best, though, as an easy game to play with a variety people of different ages and varying skill levels. Players match nouns with adjectives, revealing a lot about them and the people who pick the winners.

Cranium
A more active board game, Cranium has players of all ages drawing pictures, building things out of play, answering trivia, and acting things out. Cranium is an excellent party game since its varied gameplay means there's something fun for everyone.

Settlers of Catan
Evolving over the years, the original strategy game fun for its trading dynamic that encourages interaction between players. Settlers of Catan is a race to build the most extensive settlement and one hallmark of its great design is the fact that players aren't eliminated early on, as sometimes happens in games like Monopoly.

Quitting driving: Families key but docs have role

In this photo taken Sept. 24, 2012, Lee Sneller, left, follows his wife Pat Sneller to their car so Pat can drive him to an appointment in Flower Mound, Texas. Families may have to watch for dings in the car and plead with an older driver to give up the keys _ but there's new evidence that doctors could become more of an influence on one of the most wrenching decisions facing a rapidly aging population. A large study from Canada found that when doctors warn patients, and driving authorities, that they may be medically unfit to be on the road, there's a drop in serious crash injuries among those drivers. The study, in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, couldn't tell if the improvement was because those patients drove less, or drove more carefully once the doctor pointed out the risk. (AP) ? Families may have to watch for dings in the car and plead with an older driver to give up the keys ? but there's new evidence that doctors could have more of an influence on one of the most wrenching decisions facing a rapidly aging population.

A large study from Canada found that when doctors warn patients, and tell driving authorities, that the older folks may be medically unfit to be on the road, there's a drop in serious crash injuries among those drivers.

The study, in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, couldn't tell if the improvement was because those patients drove less, or drove more carefully once the doctors pointed out the risk.

But as the number of older drivers surges, it raises the question of how families and doctors could be working together to determine if and when age-related health problems ? from arthritis to frailty to Alzheimer's disease ? are bad enough to impair driving.

Often, families are making that tough choice between safety and independence on their own.

"It's very scary," said Pat Sneller of Flower Mound, Texas, who talked her husband, Lee, into quitting about a year after he was diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer's disease.

The couple had recently moved from California, one of the few U.S. states that require doctors to report drivers with worrisome health conditions to licensing authorities. Pat Sneller was stunned to learn Texas doesn't require that doctor involvement, and health workers advised her to ride with her husband and judge his abilities for herself.

Eventually her husband called home in a panic, lost while driving in unfamiliar Dallas for volunteer work. A long scrape on the car that he couldn't explain was the final straw. In 2010, she persuaded him to quit driving, although the now-72-year-old's license remains good until 2014.

"He still says occasionally, 'I can still drive, you know,'" Pat Sneller said.

By one U.S. estimate, about 600,000 older drivers a year quit because of health conditions. The problem: There are no clear-cut guidelines to tell who really needs to ? and given the lack of transportation options in much of the country, quitting too soon can be detrimental for someone who might have functioned well for several more years.

It's never an easy discussion.

"It did not go over so well," Benjamin Benson recalls of the time when his sons told the 87-year-old they feared his reflexes had slowed too much for safe driving.

"I've never had an accident," the Peabody, Mass., man said. His family's response: "Well, do you want to wait for the first one?"

The retired accountant wasn't ready to quit then, but he quietly began to analyze what would happen to him and his wife, who doesn't drive, if he did.

His longtime doctor wouldn't advise one way or the other. So over a few months, the couple tried online grocery shopping. They took a taxi to the dentist, not cheap at $38 round-trip. But Benson calculated that maintaining and insuring the car was expensive, too, when he drove only 3,000 miles a year.

A few weeks ago, Benson surprised his family by giving away the car, and he says he's faring fine so far.

"Most people in our age group know that it's inevitable and play around with the idea that it's going to come and the only question is when," Benson said. "I didn't want to be pushed into it."

Unlike in most of the U.S., doctors in much of Canada are supposed to report to licensing authorities patients with certain health conditions that may impair driving. Ontario in 2006 began paying doctors a small fee to further encourage that step ? and researchers used the payments to track 100,075 patients who received those warnings between April of that year and December 2009 (out of the province's more than 9 million licensed drivers).

They compared the group's overall rate of crashes severe enough to send the driver to the emergency room, before the warnings began and afterward, and found a 45 percent drop, reported lead researcher Dr. Donald Redelmeier, a University of Toronto professor. While the study included adult drivers of all ages ? for conditions ranging from epilepsy to sleep disorders, alcoholism to dementia ? most were over age 60. A small percentage of the province's licensed drivers have received warnings, Redelmeier stressed, and licenses are suspended by authorities between 10 percent and 30 percent of the time.

His study highlighted one reason physicians don't like to get involved: About 1 in 5 of the patients who were warned changed doctors. There also was an uptick in reports of depression.

Doctors aren't trained to evaluate driving ability, and the study couldn't tell if some drivers were targeted needlessly, noted Dr. Matthew Rizzo of the University of Iowa. Yet he called the research valuable.

"The message from this paper is that doctors have some wisdom in knowing when to restrict drivers," said Rizzo. His own research shows some cognitive tests might help them better identify who's at risk, such as by measuring "useful field of view," essentially how much your brain gleans at a glance ? important for safety in intersections.

Today, the American Medical Association recommends that doctors administer a few simple tests in advising older drivers. Among them:

?Walk 10 feet down the hallway, turn around and come back. Taking longer than 9 seconds is linked to driving problems.

?On a page with the letters A to L and the numbers 1 to 13 randomly arranged, see how quickly and accurately you draw a line from 1 to A, then to 2, then to B and so on. This so-called trail-making test measures memory, spatial processing and other brain skills, and doing poorly has been linked to at-fault crashes.

?Check if people can turn their necks far enough to change lanes, and have the strength to slam on brakes.

Dr. Gary Kennedy, geriatric psychiatry chief at New York's Montefiore Medical Center, often adds another question: Are his patients allowed to drive their grandchildren?

"If the answer to that is no, that's telling me the people who know the patient best have made a decision that they're not safe," said Kennedy, who offers "to be the bad cop" for families or primary care physicians having trouble delivering the news.

There are no statistics on how often doctors do these kinds of assessment.

"It's this touchy subject that nobody wants to talk about," said Dr. Marian Betz of the University of Colorado, whose surveys show most senior drivers don't think their doctors know whether they drive. She is testing if an advance directive would help get older adults talking with their doctors about how to keep watch on their driving fitness before trouble arises.

More objective measures are needed ? and to help find them, hundreds of older drivers are letting scientists install video cameras, GPS systems and other gadgets in their cars as part of massive studies of everyday driving behavior.

Identifying who needs to quit should be a last resort, said Jon Antin of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. He helps oversee data collection for a study that's enrolling 3,000 participants, including hundreds of seniors, in Florida, Indiana, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Washington. The drivers undergo a battery of medical checks before their driving patterns are recorded for 12 to 24 months.

"If you identify people at risk, maybe you can intervene to prolong the safe driving period," agreed Dr. Shawn Marshall of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He helps lead Canada's CanDrive II, a project that's tracking 928 drivers in their 70s for five years, to see how their driving changes as they get older.

For now, advocacy groups like the Alzheimer's Association and AARP offer programs to help families spot signs of driving problems and determine how to talk about it.

"I would like to think that my husband would say, 'You really shouldn't be driving anymore' and I wouldn't get mad at him," said Sally Harris, 75, of Crystal Lake, Ill., who took AARP's "We Need to Talk" program in hopes of broaching the subject with a 90-year-old friend who's having driving problems.

Others turn to driver rehabilitation specialists, occupational therapists who can spend up to four hours evaluating an older driver's vision, memory, cognition and other abilities before giving him a behind-the-wheel driving test. Some doctors and state licensing authorities order those evaluations, but programs can be hard to find, often have waiting lists and cost several hundred dollars that insurance may not cover.

Having a professional involved can keep family relationships intact, said Pam Bartle, a driver rehab specialist at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, Ill.

Still, "you could have the sweetest, nicest little old lady and she'll turn on you on a dime if you tell her she can't drive," Bartle said. "It's a desperate thing for people. They can't imagine how they'll manage without driving."

Troubled BlackBerry maker sees Africa potential

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? In a film recently made in Nigeria, a man stops a beautiful woman, suavely trying to get her to talk to him. Instead she pouts her lips and looks down at her hands, barely able to hold all of the BlackBerry phones she owns.

"If you really want to talk to me, get me a BlackBerry Bold 3 ... then and only then, you can talk to me," the woman says in the now-infamous Nollywood film "BlackBerry Babes," which follows the hijinks of beautiful women in short skirts manipulating their way to getting new mobile phones.

For troubled BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion Ltd., the stilted dialogue in Nigerian English sounds like money in the bank. The mobile phones made by RIM hold the dominant market share in both Nigeria and South Africa, two of the biggest economies on the African continent. Now opening an office in Nigeria, RIM hopes to hold onto that African advantage as its sales in Western nations tumble, company officials say.

"This is one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the world," said Robert Bose, RIM's regional managing director for the Middle East and Africa.

In Nigeria, two out of four smartphones are BlackBerry models, company officials said Tuesday during a news conference in Lagos, citing market research. The number of Nigeria smartphone users is expected to grow from 4 million at the end of 2011 to 25 million at the end of 2016, according to forecasts by Informa Telecoms & Media.

How Nigeria became enthralled with BlackBerry begins with the collapse of its state-run telephone company. Fixed, landline telephone numbers now barely exist in Africa's most populous nation with more than 160 million people. Mobile phones now fill that void, with those who can afford it often carrying two or three handsets as networks routinely drop calls. And as the nation's power supply remains erratic at best and people work a variety of jobs, the hard-keyed BlackBerry fills the void left by the absence of functional offices.

The phones' prices also make ownership a sign of status as well in a nation where most earn less than $2 a day. Business partners routinely communicate over BlackBerry's message service and the young incessantly share their gossip.

"I think people equate having a BlackBerry to a certain level of success," Bose said.

For some, BlackBerry remains the only constant means of accessing the Internet, while 94 percent of phone owners regularly use its messaging service, the officials said.

The Nigerian and African experience for RIM comes as the mobile phone manufacturer faces tougher times elsewhere. RIM's software is still focused on email, and is less user-friendly and agile than iPhone or Android. The company's attempts at touch screens largely failed and its applications lag behind its competitors.

RIM's U.S. share of the smartphone market dropped from 44 percent in 2009 to 10 percent in 2011 according to market researcher NPD Group. The company still has 78 million active subscribers worldwide.

"There's been a tectonic shift" away from hard key BlackBerry phones in North America to touch screen phones, Bose said. To halt a similar march here, Bose and others announced they will open an office in Lagos, as well as set up operations around the country to allow users to come in and update their phones' software for free. The company also has plans to offer applications for sale by having mobile phone carriers bill the user, rather than require credit cards, said Waldi Wepener, RIM's regional director for East, Central and West Africa.

Yet challenges remain. In Nigeria, the government currently faces a growing threat from a radical Islamist sect and secret police routinely watch and harass opposition leaders and journalists. Bose repeatedly declined to say whether Nigeria had asked for access to information from BlackBerry or demanded servers be set up in the country to monitor traffic. Other nations in the past have made similar demands of RIM. Some messages may still be encrypted, so it's not clear what nations could pull from it.

For now, though, RIM hopes to continue ride on its wave of popularity in Africa. And for the film "BlackBerry Babes," Bose simply said: "We're actually flattered by it."

The Small-Business Buzz : The World :: American Express OPEN ...

Here are some of the top stories in small business from the past week.?

Buried in last week's news about election gaffes and the iPhone 5 was some mixed news for small businesses. After the chief economist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said earlier this month that the country could plunge into a recession by next summer, Sage North America reported that small- and mid-sized businesses have been adding personnel. The survey respondents were positively rosy about new orders and production, to boot.

And the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce said that new enterprises launched by Hispanics were the fastest-growing sector of U.S. businesses.??

Leave it to Washington to kill the party. Reuters reported that small businesses could lose nearly a million jobs in 2013 if Congress fails to stop harsh budget cuts that are slated to start in January. An analysis released by the Aerospace Industries Association shows that small and mid-size suppliers would take the biggest hits if the government slashes national security and procurement budgets.

Good thing there are businesses offering bionic yarn made from plastic bottles and recycled iPhone speakers. These are some of the earnest products that swoon-worthy actor Adrian Grenier features on his new startup site, SHFT.com. Co-founded with business partner Peter Glatzer, the site curates eco-friendly products. Huffington Post shares details with the star and his friend.

For those weighing the allure of venture capital bucks, the folks at Inc. offered some advice on when?and when not?to say yes. VCs were once the only party checking out companies needing investments. But serial entrepreneur Rajat Bhargava warns that startups should scope out the people with the money?and walk away when a deal is laden with caveats.

The way to Finance Your Tiny Company | lmaureen.com

If you have a fantastic enterprise idea or plan, or you would like to expand your existing organization, don?t let a lack of funds stop you inside your tracks. There is a wide variety of financing accessible for small organizations. Let?s have a look at the financing possibilities that modest organization entrepreneurs can benefit from.

Although the financing sources comprise diverse institutions, for example banks, government sources, venture capitalist and ?angel? investors, it is helpful to look at what all lenders, irrespective of category, want once they loan income or invest within a business enterprise.

Once you seek cash for an already current organization, lenders will be interested to understand in regards to the history of your enterprise; no matter whether it features a track record of great management and very good overall performance. Lenders will probably be keen to understand regardless of whether you might have the capacity to repay a loan and can look at your present cash-flow to find out no matter whether it truly is sufficient to enable you to meet your present obligations at the same time as to take on additional debt.

Your credit history will also be under scrutiny. A great credit background will help you to obtain a loan. If you have had issues previously, it really is very best to bring these to the consideration from the lender your self and clarify how you?ve turned the predicament around.

You can also bolster your chances of getting a loan by placing up collateral. This reduces the threat for the bank in situation you default. And lastly, in case you can show that your own personal personal money is invested in your enterprise then lenders will have more self-confidence inside the proposition.

Several little business loans are turned down due to poorly presented proposals, inadequate collateral, insufficient cash flow and a lack of management experience.

These are the general points that lenders and investors are enthusiastic about, now let?s look in the principal sources for small company financing.

1. Standard Lenders: Banks, credit unions, and finance companies are the primary source of loans to tiny corporations. Numerous of those institutions have a small-business department and are skilled in handling small-business loans. The most logical location to start is using the institution which handles your company and individual banking. You ought to do your best to obtain to know the manager and personnel at the bank. So don?t make an effort to save time at the ATM! Being friendly with all the bank staff won?t guarantee you a loan but it will make it simpler for you personally to produce your loan presentation.

2. Government Sources, the Tiny Company Administration (SBA): The programs of the SBA work in conjunction using the traditional lenders, as they are mostly loan guarantee applications that reduce the risk to lenders in case of default. Some of the well-liked SBA programs are as follows

a. The 7(a) loan guarantee plan: This program aids organizations which lack adequate collateral, by providing repayment guarantees ranging from 75-85% based on the size from the loan.

b. The SBA LowDoc loan program: There?s only a single form to fill out for these loans and approval time is rapid (within 36 hours from when the SBA receives the applications. These loans are only for amounts up to $15,000 but they can be employed for start-up organizations.

c. The SBAExpress loan system: This really is one more quick-procedure loan guarantee plan, nevertheless it covers loans up to $250,000. The SBA guarantees 50% of those loans, and interest rates in this program might be greater than inside the other SBA applications

d. Microloans: They are loans for amounts as much as $35,000 that are made by non-profit community based organizations.

3. Venture Capitalists: These are usually firms which can be in search of investment possibilities in businesses with a high profit possible. Normally once you take funds from a Venture Capitalist firm it means that you have to quit some ownership and manage towards the investors. Should you are thinking of going within this direction, then it?s imperative to investigate the VC firm, and make certain that it has very good references.

4. Angel Investors: These are individual investors who?re seeking for excellent opportunities within a wide variety of businesses. You don?t need to be a high-tech organization to attract these funds. Angels have smaller sums to invest than venture capitalists, and their investments range from $100,000 to $1 Million. You will find a superb quantity of angel investors within the U.S. and Canada, with at the very least 170 investment groups or angel networks spread about each nations. You are able to find the angels by generating a search on the internet, searching for angel associations inside your particular location of company. You are able to also inquire along with your nearby tiny company librarian, the chamber of commerce, your neighborhood SCORE workplace and with other non-competitive businesses.

As you?ll be able to see from this brief survey, the money for small companies is available. Prepare your proposal very carefully, and approach the institutions or individuals that very best match your requirements and capacity.

How to Use Instagram to Promote Your Business | Constant Contact ...

This article is part of our series for London Social Media Week. Read all the posts in this series.

Instagram is a mobile photo editing and sharing app that saw its user base explode from 15 to 80 million since Facebook acquired the company back in April.

But even before the acquisition, many savvy brands had joined the platform?especially retail brands with stunning visual content. Clothing, media, and design-based brands were a natural fit for both the platform technology and Instagram?s early adopter user base.

However, unlike Facebook or Twitter, Instagram doesn?t have business-specific profiles, built-in visibility or engagement metrics, or paid advertising options.

So why are brands rushing to join yet another social network? Here?s why:

Instagram is easy-to-use ? and awesome!

Instagram?s technology helps you easily create stunning images that you can easily use on your other social networks.

Both Facebook and Twitter have optimized how photos are displayed on these platforms and you can share directly from Instagram to those platforms (as well as to Tumblr, Foursquare, Flickr, and email) automatically or by individual selection.

Instagram allows visual storytelling with no advertising

Both the way the platform works (the technology) and the way most users approach the platform (the user experience) allows brands to employ visual storytelling that has more continuity and artistic value than other platforms.

With the absence of advertising (or even clickable links in captions or comments), business uses for an Instagram profile begin and end (for now) with awareness and branding. However, a few images that encapsulate a brand moment in a second or two is much more impactful than lines and lines of copy?no matter how brilliant the writing is.

Instagram is mobile ? perfect for what people want ? instagramification

Instagram combines two of the most powerful forces in the social technology market?mobile and photo sharing?to create a platform that truly offers a unique value proposition. Brands with an Instagram presence can take advantage of that intersection where users are focusing their attention.

Here are six tips to help you get the most out of this powerful tool:

1. Use images to tell a story, not blast your branding

If you sell a product or service, make sure the images you use are about the experience of using the product or service, and not a product placement ad.

Starbucks is an example of a big brand that does this well. Sure their photos show lots of Starbucks cups, but their photos also tell a story?the focus is always on what the person is doing while enjoying their coffee?on the beach, reading a book, etc.

There?s not a lot of tolerance for marketing that?s obviously marketing. Keep it subtle and keep the focus on your customers.

2. Most photos fall into two categories: beautiful imagery or humor

Make sure your Instagram photos fall into one of these categories. Most users aren?t posting all their random party pics to their Instagram stream and brands should exercise similar constraint. Photo albums in that vein are for Facebook. Think of your Instagram photos as high value/low volume.

3. Don?t post too often

A general rule, don?t post more than three photos in a row or one every three hours. If you post more often than that, you run the risk of hogging your users? feed.

Anecdotally, I?ve noticed that most users follow between 50 and 250 users. I think this is a sign of social media maturity?folks are learning from their experiences on Facebook and Twitter that following too many accounts is overwhelming.

Also, unlike Facebook, the commitment level to an account is low??unfollows? can happen frequently. Don?t automatically share your Instagram photos?editorially select and customize each?one for the appropriate platform.

And remember, you can use apps like PicFrame to include several snaps in one Instagram. Just be sure the images are related and the impact is magnified (rather than splintered) when you use a collage.

4. Choose an account name that?s the same as your Twitter handle

Having the same Instagram account name and Twitter handle serves two purposes. One?your profile will be easily recognizable and easy to find. And two?if you are tagged by another user in a caption and that photo is shared on Twitter, that tag will link to your Twitter profile. It ensures that tagging makes sense when an Instagram photo is shared on other networks.

5. Use hashtags, but don?t be creepy about it

Like on Twitter, hashtagging photos enables discovery of your profile by users outside of your primary connections. You can use the search functionality on the app to find out which hashtags are often used. Like on Twitter, hashtagging Instagram?photos?by event, geolocation, or subject matter is a good idea.

Other hashtags people tend to use on Instagram are filters and colors. Hashtags tend to be somewhat limited on Twitter due to the character length limitations. Because Instagram doesn?t have these limitations, this has encouraged some users and brands to stuff Instagram captions with every hashtag imaginable. Don?t do this?it looks like you?re trying too hard. Even worse, it makes you look like a spammer.

6. Set up an account on a web-based viewer

Instagram?s focus continues to be all about the mobile experience, but the app recently added the ability to view individual photos on the web through a shareable link. This feature allows your Instagram?stream?to not only be seen by those not using the app, but allows those who do have an account to like and comment on a shared photo right from the web. However, using a separate web-based viewer can help you manage your presence and track your progress.

Using Instagram?s API, these tools recreate your feed on a webpage, so you can view multiple photos at a time (without scrolling) on your computer. Most often you can make the same actions (liking, commenting, searching, tagging, etc.) on these web viewers that you can make on the mobile app. My favorite tool is Statigram?they even have a few basic metrics, comment notifications, and an Instagram campaign toolkit.

Bottom line: As the old adage goes?a picture is worth 1,000 words. It?s still true today, but with Instagram, a picture may also be worth 1,000 ?likes,? retweets,?and shares!

Is your business using Instagram? Tell us how you you?ve used it to help promote your business!

Debt crisis: Spain 'will need extra bail-out'

Nomura Global Economics said in a note: "Our initial reaction to the publication of those estimates has been negative. The announced figures are well below the market expectations, which start at around ?100bn, and, in our view, not only fall short of bolstering market confidence but may actually increase the risk of Spain losing market access."

In June, Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish prime minister, negotiated a deal that secured lending from Brussels of up to ?100bn to recapitalise the banks. Experts now think that it will not be enough. Amid soaring borrowing costs and a stricken economy, Spain has come under intense pressure to ask Brussels for a full sovereign bail-out.

The request would enable Mario Draghi to unleash the European Central Bank's bond-buying programme, which he unveiled recently but said would not be deployed to help Spain unless Madrid first requested help.

Mr Rajoy has resisted, saying Madrid is not prepared to accept stringent austerity conditions that would accompany a Greek-style bail-out.

But last week, the economic crisis was eclipsed by a potentially explosive fall-out between Madrid and one of its biggest regions, Catalonia. The escalating row, over power and taxes, has led to experts warning of violence and even civil war in Spain.

In a dramatic move, Catalonia's ruling parties sought guidance from Brussels on the legality of secession from Spain, requesting a "route map" for membership of the European Union and the euro as an independent state.

Foreign minister Jose-Manuel Garcia-Margallo responded by calling Catalan secession "illegal and lethal". He warned that Spain would use its veto to stop the region of Catalonia becoming an EU member "indefinitely".

Catalonia's parliament will meet next week to "think deeply" about its next fateful step. Artur Mas, the Catalan leader, said last week: "Catalonia will follow its path. We have no enemies but we will build our own project as a country."

NY youth baseball coach accused of stalking rival

A youth baseball coach from Long Island appeared in court Saturday, accused of stalking his rival's family and sending threatening text messages, police said.

Police said 45-year-old Robert Sanfilippo, who manages a team of 10- and 11-year-old boys, was arrested on charges of stalking and aggravated harassment during a game in Yaphank on Friday and appeared in court Saturday for arraignment. He was released without bail, police said. It was not clear if the Huntington man had an attorney.

Newsday reported (http://bit.ly/OPHQJi) that Suffolk County police said Sanfilippo got into a dispute with another coach during a tournament in May. Police said Sanfilippo then bought an untraceable phone and started sending text messages threatening to harm the other coach, his son and his wife.

Commack resident John Reardon told Newsday that he, his wife and their 10-year-old son were the targets of Sanfilippo's messages.

"I didn't know it was him at first," Reardon said. "It was nerve-racking. I couldn't sleep. When he suddenly started mentioning my son by name, it just hit me that it was this guy."

The texted threats included blurry photos that appeared to be taken from a long-distance zoom lens, with one showing Reardon waiting with his son for the school bus and another of his wife taking packages out of the car, Reardon said.

Reardon said the texts included threats saying the sender would pick up Reardon's son at his bus stop.

"That's when it got scary and that's when I went to the police," he said.

Detroit ex-mayor's alleged schemes detailed

Detroit --

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick repeatedly stuffed his bank account and paid off credit cards with hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, the illegal fruit of a crooked politician who took bribes and left taxpayers "holding the short end of the stick," a prosecutor told jurors Friday at the start of a corruption trial.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Chutkow described Kilpatrick as a young, enthusiastic state lawmaker of modest means who was elected mayor in 2001 and then set off on a sweeping scheme to enrich himself through extortion and bribes. Also on trial are his father, Bernard, and the ex-mayor's best friend, Bobby Ferguson.

Chutkow said Kilpatrick, 42, deposited more than $200,000 in cash in his bank account and paid his credit card bills with an additional $280,000 in cash. The prosecutor said more than $60,000 in cash was spent on custom-made suits.

"It didn't come from his payroll check. It did not come from a rich relative, and it didn't come from savvy investments," Chutkow told the jury.

Kilpatrick, who quit office in 2008 in an unrelated scandal and served 14 months in prison for a probation violation, is charged with racketeering conspiracy, extortion, bribery, fraud, false tax returns and tax evasion. If convicted, he could be sentenced to more than 10 years in prison.

The government alleges that he rigged city contracts to put Ferguson's construction company in line for millions of dollars in work. The source of many public deals was the Detroit water department, which had more than $1 billion to spend on services. Its former chief, Victor Mercado, is a co-defendant.

Kilpatrick, 42, also is accused of taking kickbacks from his campaign fundraiser and tapping a nonprofit fund "like a personal ATM" for vacations, summer camps for his kids, golf clubs and other perks not reported as income on his tax returns.

Kilpatrick's defense attorney, James Thomas, called the government's case a "scam."

Ancient land of 'Beringia' gets protection from US, Russia

Chukot-TINRO

Tens of thousands of walruses make their home in Beringia, including these seen last fall at Cape Serdtse-Kamen in Chukotka, Russia.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

You might have missed it, but the ancient land of Beringia has gotten some extra protection from superpowers Russia and the United States.?

That's right, Beringia -- 2,800 miles stretching from Siberia, across the Bering and Chukchi seas, through Alaska and into Canada's British Columbia. For thousands of years, Beringia even had a 1,000-mile-long land bridge that emerged when sea level dropped.

OK, so it's not an actual nation, but Beringia does have its own heritage of people divided by borders but united culturally -- and a natural kingdom of whales, polar bears, walruses and seals.

?"From the diversity of its Arctic wildlife, both on land and within its waters, to the bounty it provides that sustains cultures on both sides of the U.S.-Russian border, Beringia is home to a kingdom of wildlife and cultural riches, deserving of protection in perpetuity," Cristian Samper, president of the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society, told NBC News.

"This announcement," he added, "brings us one step closer to that reality."

Samper was talking about a meeting between?Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her Russian peer earlier this month, where both nations agreed to work toward "a transboundary area of shared Beringian heritage" by 2013.?

National Park Service

That designation would create closer ties between two U.S. national parks -- the Bering Land Bridge Natural Preserve and the Cape Krusenstern National Monument -- with Russia's soon-to-be-designated Beringia National Park.

"Park managers and researchers from both countries will be able to increase their efforts to conserve this unique ecosystem as well as the cultural traditions and languages of the indigenous people on both sides of the (Bering) strait," Clinton said at the meeting on Sept. 8.

Even before the announcement, the U.S. National Park Service has had a program since the 1990s to promote Beringia, a term first coined in 1937.

Bob Gerhard / National Park Service

Anadyr, the capital of Russia's Chukotka Autonomous Region, is part of Beringia and faces the Bering Sea.

"As one of the world's great ancient crossroads, Beringia may hold solutions to puzzles about who were the first people to populate North America, how and when they traveled, and how they survived under such harsh climatic conditions," a website dedicated to Beringia reads.

Watch a video on Beringian petroglyphs.

The park service program stems from a 1990 announcement by then President George H. W. Bush and Soviet President Mikhael Gorbachev to establish an international park spanning the Bering Strait.?

A full-fledged international park never came about, in part because of suspicions by native groups. But the new, smaller approach is aimed at easing those concerns.

Vic Knox / National Park Service

Native festivals like this one are typical in Anadyr, a city in Russia's autonomous region of Chukotka that is part of the wider region known as Beringia.

The Wildlife Conservation Society is among the environmental groups excited about stronger cross-border ties.?It already has a "Beringia Program" that looks at:

  • How shipping in formerly ice-covered seas will affect marine life and indigenous people who rely on that for food.
  • The threat walruses face from shrinking sea ice, which they rely on to rest while at sea. Less sea ice has led to overcrowding and even walruses crushed to death as they "haul out" by the thousands to rest on beaches.
  • The impacts of human development on birds from around the world that nest and breed in the Arctic tundra.

Chukot-TINRO

Scientists are seeing more of these massive "haul outs" by walruses. These were seen last fall on Russia's Cape Serdtse-Kamen, part of the larger Beringia region.

The organization's "Beringia Program" manager sees the U.S.-Russia effort as keeping recent momentum moving forward. Both native peoples and wildlife, Martin Robards told NBC News, face living "in a region warming at twice the global average, while at the same time, adjusting to a rapid influx of new development interests."

As for the variety of wildlife, "it's phenomenal," Robards said. "In the fall and spring animals come through the Bering Strait -- whales, polar bears, walruses and seals."

That wealth makes it easy for Robards to spend his time on Beringia. But getting its importance across to others can be problematic, so having two superpowers raise?Beringia's profile is a big plus.

"It does need explaining at times," he admits.
