The Nicaraguan Government has formalized the acquisition of a communications satellite for USD 244 million, with the Chinese firm Gran Muralla China. The latter will start with the construction of Nicasat-1 in January 2013 and it is expected to be placed in orbit by mid-2015. The Nicaraguan Pay-TV market is currently led by the cable and DTH operator Claro TV (Am?rica M?vil), followed by Sky (DirecTV/Televisa), and cable operators IBW and Telecable.
The agreement was executed in October by representatives of the regulating entity of the country and Instituto Nicarag?ense de Telecomunicaciones (Telcor) and the Chinese Gran Muralla China. Such agreement was entered into after several months of negotiations in which the country managed to lower the satellite construction Price from USD 300 million to USD 244 million. ?Funds are guaranteed but the loan has not been executed yet?, stated Telcor President, Orlando Castillo.
Nicasat-1 will render satellite services to Nicaraguan communication and television firms and other Central American countries. This project will enable savings for USD 8 million annually, which is the amount currently paid by telecommunications firms for the use of such services. Additionally, cellular telephony, Internet access and Pay-TV prices are expected to be reduced, thus enabling the service arrival in rural areas where cable does not operate.
