Kennedy name gives pol early boost (Politico)

Joe Kennedy III just had to consider running for Congress for his fundraising to kick into high gear.

The prospect of the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy and son of former Rep. Joe Kennedy II taking outgoing Rep. Barney Frank?s seat in Massachusetts?s 4th Congressional District has the political money world buzzing.

Part of it is in the name: The 31-year-old lawyer is just what Washingtonians long for in an old-fashioned Kennedy ? Harvard law degree, a Peace Corps stint, time spent fighting corruption as a prosecutor and even an attractive fianc?e.

The package of pedigree plus bona fides has attracted support from the Kennedy network, big Democratic donors and K Street ? people who can?t resist a little taste of Camelot.

?There?s an excitement not only because he comes from this line, this family that we all have such tremendous respect for, but also because he clearly has an unbelievable background,? said Andy Rosenberg of Thorn Run Partners. ?For those of us who haven?t met him personally, there?s a great hope that he has the potential to be another great leader for our party.?

Longtime Massachusetts political operative John Weinfurter agreed.

?There?s always interest in seeing a new product. Joe is the latest product from the Kennedy family. There is great interest in seeing what makes him tick,? said Weinfurter, who is now at KSCW Public Policy Advocates.

Still, his campaign has already drawn much support from the Kennedy network. Peter Maroney, finance director for Sen. John Kerry?s 2004 presidential bid, has signed on as a volunteer. Former Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) also chaired a late January fundraiser in Rhode Island supporting his cousin. Victoria Reggie Kennedy, widow of Sen. Ted Kennedy has also been a vocal player and fundraiser.

Sources familiar with the fundraising operation say that is just getting started. A fundraising steering committee meeting in Washington is expected in the coming weeks.

For his part, Kennedy isn?t leaving anything to chance, making personal calls and even going so far as to activate his high school network, according to sources familiar with the efforts.

But it?s his name that is a draw to many K-Streeters and former Massachusetts congressional aides interested in the race.

Kennedy is looking to capitalize on that buzz with his first inside-the-Beltway fundraisers next week. Charles Baker of Dewey Square Group; Susan Brophy of the Glover Park Group; Jay McCarthy of Liberty Square Group; Heather Podesta of Heather Podesta+Partners; and Tony Podesta of the Podesta Group, among others, are listed on the luncheon fundraising invitation, which asks hosts to pony up $2,500 and sponsors to contribute $1,000. The Feb. 23 event is being held at the offices of Avenue Solutions, which counts Tracy Spicer, former political director to Ted Kennedy, as a partner.
