HBT: O's Hammel accuses Jays of stealing signs?

Jason Hammel came into yesterday?s game with a 2.78 ERA and just three homers allowed in nine starts this season, but the Orioles right-hander served up four homers to the Blue Jays and afterward got about as close to accusing them of stealing signs as he could possibly get without actually doing it.

Here?s what Hammel told Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun:

They?re a very potent offense and if you don?t make your pitches down they?re going to get them out. They were taking some pretty big hacks on my breaking stuff too, which leads me to believe it was something else. It is what it is. I need to keep the ball down.

When you?re locating your fastball, you?re going to give up some home runs there, but the swings they were taking on he breaking stuff, it was pretty amazing to me. I don?t think you can take swings like that not knowing they?re coming. I don?t know. That?s all I can say.

This is far from the first time an opposing pitcher has accused the Blue Jays of stealing signs in Toronto and in fact Amy K. Nelson wrote a whole article about it in ESPN The Magazine a couple years ago, making ?the man in white? famous.

When asked if he was aware of the past accusations, Hammel replied:

There?s rumors and things like that. I don?t know. I can?t speak on that, but they were taking very, very big strong hacks on breaking stuff. It was something I?ve never seen before.

Hammel has started 125 career games. Not only was that the first time he?s allowed four homers, he?d allowed three homers just twice before and gave up zero homers in 65 of those 125 starts.

Toronto has hit .262 with an .803 OPS at home this season, compared to .231 with a .660 OPS on the road. Their splits weren?t quite as extreme last season, but the Blue Jays hit .254 with a .759 OPS at home compared to .244 with a .699 OPS on the road. So ? if they are stealing signs at home the Blue Jays are at least doing a pretty effective job of it.

CoreLogic - Marshfield Real Estate

05/30/2012 By: Esther Cho, DSNews.com

In April, the number of completed foreclosures was 66,000, down 15 percent compared to the same month a year ago when there were 78,000 completed foreclosures, according to CoreLogic. Month-over-month, the number of completed foreclosures remained unchanged.

Since September 2008, there have been 3.6 million completed foreclosures.

The number of homes in foreclosure inventory as of April 2012 shrank slightly from 1.5 million homes a year ago to 1.4 million, which accounts for about 3.4 percent of all homes with a mortgage. The number stayed unchanged from the month before in March.

?There were more than 830,000 completed foreclosures over the past year or, in other words, one completed foreclosure for every 622 mortgaged homes,? said Mark Fleming, chief economist for CoreLogic.

When breaking down the data based on judicial and non-judicial states, Fleming noted that non-judicial states such as Nevada, Arizona, and California completed two and a half times as many foreclosures over the past year as judicial foreclosure states.

Among the five states with the highest number of completed foreclosures ? California (142,622), Florida (92,137), Michigan (60,198), Texas (57,536), and Georgia (56,894) ? only Florida is a judicial state. These states alone account for 48.8 percent of all completed foreclosures nationally.

While non-judicial states completed more foreclosures, judicial states had high levels of foreclosure inventory.

The five states with the highest foreclosure inventory as a percentage of all homes with a mortgage were Florida (12 percent), New Jersey (6.7 percent), Illinois (5.3 percent), Nevada (5 percent) and New York (5 percent). With the exception of Nevada, all states are judicial.

On a more microscopic level, Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) with the highest number of completed foreclosures were Phoenix (39,779); Atlanta (39,318); Riverside, California (28,315); Los Angeles (23,562); and Houston (16,904).

In the New York metro where foreclosure timelines tend to be longer compared to other states, there were 1096 mortgages per completed foreclosure. The number of mortgages per completed foreclosure is calculated by dividing the number of homes with a mortgage in each area by the sum of completed foreclosures for the prior 12 months. In Phoenix, there were only 18 mortgages per completed foreclosure.

UK's top court backs extradition of WikiLeaks boss

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Supreme Court has endorsed the extradition of WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange to Sweden, bringing the secret-spilling Internet activist a big step closer to prosecution in a Scandinavian court.

But a question mark hung over the decision after Assange's lawyer made the highly unusual suggestion that she would try to reopen the case, raising the prospect of more legal wrangling.

Assange, 40, has spent the better part of two years fighting attempts to send him to Sweden, where he is wanted over sex crime allegations. He has yet to be charged.

The U.K. side of that struggle came to an uncertain end Wednesday, with the nation's highest court ruling 5-2 that the warrant seeking his arrest was properly issued ? and Assange's lawyer saying she might contest the ruling.

Supreme Court President Nicholas Phillips, reading out the verdict, acknowledged that coming to a conclusion in the high-profile case had "not been simple."

Assange's story has been shot through with international intrigue, online activism, and scandal. But the case before the Supreme Court hinged on a narrow technicality: Did Swedish officials properly order his arrest?

His lawyers say "no." A prosecutor, not a judge, issued the warrant, a practice they've described as arbitrary and unfair. Swedish officials say "yes," arguing that, in Sweden as in other European countries, prosecutors carry out a quasi-judicial function.

The Supreme Court came down on Sweden's side Wednesday, with Phillips ruling that "the request for Mr. Assange's extradition has been lawfully made and his appeal against extradition is accordingly dismissed."

But scarcely had Phillips finished speaking before Assange lawyer Dinah Rose was on her feet, complaining that the court's ruling largely relied on a treaty whose interpretation she says she never had the chance to challenge.

In a surprise move, she requested extra time to study the judgment with an eye toward trying to reopen the case.

Phillips gave Rose two weeks to make a submission, meaning an extradition wouldn't happen until the second half of June at the earliest.

Such a maneuver is practically unheard of, according to attorney Karen Todner, whose law firm handles many high-profile extradition cases.

"It's very unusual," she told The Associated Press. "I've never known them to reopen a case."

Any eventual extradition of Assange could, however, be much later. Even if the Supreme Court refuses to revisit its judgment, Assange could appeal to the European Court of Human Rights, although Todner said he was unlikely to make much headway there unless he could argue that his physical safety or psychological well-being would be at risk in Sweden.

Assange, a former computer hacker from Australia, shot to international prominence in 2010 with the release of hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. documents, including a hard-to-watch video that showed U.S. forces gunning down a crowd of Iraqi civilians and journalists that they'd mistaken for insurgents.

His release of a quarter-million classified U.S. State Department cables in the final months of that year outraged Washington and destabilized American diplomacy worldwide.

But his work exposing government secrets increasingly came under a cloud after two Swedish women accused him of molestation and rape following a visit to the country in mid-2010. Assange denies wrongdoing, saying the sex was consensual, but has refused to go to Sweden, claiming he won't get a fair trial there.

He and his supporters have also hinted that the sex allegations are a cover for a planned move to extradite him to the United States, where he claims he's been secretly indicted for the WikiLeaks disclosures.

Those allegations, paired with the ponderous progress of Assange's appeals, have caused irritation in Sweden.

Claes Borgstrom, the lawyer who represents the two Swedish women who accuse Assange of sex crimes, expressed support for the verdict, but said he found it "difficult to understand" why the defense had been given the opportunity to try to reopen the case.

He dismissed suggestions that the underlying motive behind the extradition was to hand Assange over to the U.S.

"He is not at a greater risk of being handed over from Sweden than from Britain," he told the AP.

Borgstrom wasn't the only one expressing impatience. Ola Lofgren, of the Swedish prosecutor general's office, said it was in everyone's interest that the judicial back-and-forth "is shortened as much as possible."

Australia's government also weighed in, saying in a statement that it would "closely monitor" any proceedings against Assange in Sweden.

Unusually, Assange did not appear in court Wednesday; he was reportedly stuck in traffic. The WikiLeaks chief has spent much of the past 18 months living in a supporter's mansion in rural England.

Although his website has languished amid legal and financial issues, he's moved on to other projects, including a WikiLeaks-themed social networking site and a talk show on the Russian government's English-language broadcaster, RT.

WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson said Wednesday's judgment was "disappointing, but not surprising." He noted that Assange's legal options weren't exhausted, although he declined to speak about future strategy.

High court turns down former hostages in Iran

(AP) ? The Supreme Court has declined to revive a lawsuit against Iran filed by Americans held hostage at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran more than 30 years ago.

The justices on Tuesday did not comment in letting stand lower court decisions dismissing the $6.6 billion class-action lawsuit.

Tho lower courts found the agreement to release the hostages, known as the Algiers Accords, precluded lawsuits against Iran. The suit argued that legislation in 2008 gave the hostages the right to sue.

Fifty-two American diplomats and military officials were held captive for more than a year at the end of Jimmy Carter's presidency by a group of Islamist students who supported the Iranian revolution.

The hostages were released on Jan. 20, 1981, just minutes after Ronald Reagan was sworn in to succeed Carter.

(AP) ? A mob set fire late Monday to the campaign headquarters of one of the two Egyptian presidential politicians facing each other in a runoff that will decide a new leader after last year's popular uprising, the first sign of unrest after the voting yielded divisive candidates.

The attack on Ahmed Shafiq's office came just hours after the country's election commission announced that he would face the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, Mohammed Morsi, in a June 16-17 runoff.

The second round pitting Shafiq, who was ousted President Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, against Morsi, backed by the country's most powerful Islamist movement, is a nightmare scenario for the thousands of Egyptians who took to the streets last year to demand regime change, freedom and social equality.

Many of the so-called revolutionaries say they want neither a return to the old regime nor religious rule.

"The choice can't be between a religious state and an autocratic state. Then we have done nothing," said Ahmed Bassiouni, 35, who was sitting in Cairo's downtown Tahrir Square in the midst of a growing protest.

In an upscale neighborhood of Cairo, mobs of young men used bricks to smash the windows of Shafiq's headquarters, tossing out campaign signs and tearing up his posters. Then they set fire to the building. There were no reports of injuries. Police arrested eight people.

His campaign blamed supporters of leftist candidate Hamdeen Sabahi, who came in third in the race, and backers of another losing candidate, Khaled Ali, who was protesting the election results Monday evening in Tahrir Square, the center of last year's uprising.

Shafiq, also a former air force commander, was forced out of office as prime minister by protesters shortly after Mubarak's fall. He has since presented himself as a figure who can restore calm to a country wracked by 15 months of sometimes violent protests and deterioration in internal security. He has expressed a zero-tolerance attitude toward protests, reflecting his background in the military and in the former regime, which put down protests with brutal force and jailed opponents.

Shortly after the protesters ransacked the campaign office, fire trucks and police arrived as several hundred of Shafiq's supporters gathered outside the building, carrying his picture and chanting slogans against the Muslim Brotherhood, which controls the parliament and is now seeking the presidency.

"The Brotherhood are enemies of God!," chanted the crowd.

The Morsi-Shafiq runoff is a polarizing contest. It mirrors the conflict between Mubarak, himself a career air force officer like Shafiq, and the Islamists he jailed and tortured throughout his years in power. But it sidelines the mostly young, secular activists who led the popular uprising last year.

The commission reported Monday that Morsi won close to 5.8 million votes, or almost 25 percent, while Shafiq received 5.5 million votes, or nearly 24 percent. Sabahi, a socialist, finished third with 4.8 million votes, or about 21 percent. Fourth place went to moderate Islamist Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh. Turnout was about 50 percent.

In Tahrir Square, several thousands protesters chanted slogans against the military rulers who took over after Mubarak's ouster. Protesters have clashed frequently with the military in street protests that have killed more than 100 people, charging that the military is perpetuating the repressive practices of the Mubarak regime and bungling the transition to a new, elected government.

Protesters also chanted slogans against both Morsi and Shafiq, saying they will not allow Egypt to be ruled by one party again nor allow the former regime to regain power.

"Freedom! Freedom!" the crowds chanted, fists pumping in the air.

Some were demanding that a law approved by parliament banning former high-level regime officials from running in the election be implemented. That could apply to Shafiq. Egypt's Constitutional Court is set to look at the law just four days before the runoff.

Others charge that last week's election, with 13 candidates, was rigged, though observers said the vote was generally free.

In the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, where Sabahi, a favorite among many revolutionaries, won the most votes, protesters tore down and burned large Shafiq and Morsi posters and protested against military rule.

In the Nile Delta provinces of Dakahliya and Mansoura, protesters took to the streets in similar protests. Security officials said protesters in Mansoura tried to attack the campaign offices of Morsi and Shafiq, but supporters of both candidates stopped the crowd.

The protests come just one day after Sabahi and Abolfotoh, whose supporters backed the popular uprising, filed appeals to the election commission to delay announcing the first round results until allegations of voter fraud could be investigated. Their appeals were rejected Monday.

Speaking to reporters Monday, Abolfotoh said "violations threatened the integrity of the election."

"It is impossible under any circumstances for me to say with a national conscience that these elections were clean," Abolfotoh said.

The fire burned early Saturday through remote and rugged terrain around the Gila Wilderness and has grown to 85,000 acres or more than 130 square miles. Fire officials say nearly all of the growth has come in recent days due to relentless winds. (AP Photo/NASA)

(AP) ? A wildfire in Gila National Forest burned through more timber and brush lands as it forced the evacuation of residents living near a privately owned ghost town in southwestern New Mexico, officials said.

Fueled by strong, erratic winds, the Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire burning through rugged and remote terrain grew Saturday to an estimated 100,000 acres, or more than 150 square miles. It was still 0 percent contained.

The evacuation of Mogollon, a privately owned ghost town, was ordered Saturday due to extreme wind.

Five helicopters and more than 600 firefighters from around the state were on hand to fight the blaze but still had to contend with "extreme conditions."

Cities, as far away as Albuquerque, remained under a health alert until Sunday afternoon due to smoke from the fire, which has spread across the state. State officials were warning residents during the Memorial Day weekend to limit outdoor activities, especially if smoke was visible.

The haze that blocked views of the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque on Friday appeared to have decreased by early Saturday afternoon, but smoke continued to hang over parts of the city.

Meanwhile on Saturday, crews in Colorado battled a wildfire that has scorched more than 3,000 acres of rugged canyon land near the Colorado-Utah border. U.S. Forest Service spokesman Steve Segin said the fire started Friday afternoon and is burning in a remote area near Paradox. It is not threatening any structures, and no injuries have been reported.

Shannon Borders, a spokeswoman for The Bureau of Land Management, said sheriff's deputies have evacuated the Buckeye Reservoir area, a popular recreation spot near the Utah border. The Rock Creek and Sinbad Valley areas also were evacuated.

In California, higher humidity and light winds were helping firefighters get ahead of a stubborn wildfire that has charred 4,100 acres of tinder-dry grass and brush in rural San Diego County.

The blaze near Shelter Valley was burning Saturday in steep, rocky terrain away from the town of Julian, said Thomas Shoots, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. It was 65 percent contained.

No injuries or damage to structures were reported, and the fire was not moving toward any homes as it burned southeast on Saturday.

Arizona fire officials said a cold front arriving over the state late Friday was providing additional relief to firefighters battling the Gladiator Fire, a blaze that has charred 16,000 acres and is now 40 percent contained. Electricity has been restored to some areas.

Veteran-Owned Franchises Gain Momentum through VetFran ...

The International Franchise Association announced this week that the number of veteran-owned franchise businesses among the top military-friendly franchises jumped 35% in the last year. The number of veteran-owned franchises among this elite group rose by nearly 4,000 to total 11,469 franchises across the country. All of The Dwyer Group??s brands were listed among G.I. Jobs? top 10% of Military Friendly Franchises in 2012. For certain The Dwyer Group concepts, the proportion of veteran-owned franchise units is as high as 1 in 5.

Just a few days before Memorial Day, the news couldn?t have come at a better time. The research was conducted in collaboration with G.I. Jobs and MilitaryFranchising.com, both IFA members.

Many of these new franchises are attributable to the IFA?s VetFran program, which was founded by The Dwyer Group?s founder Don Dwyer in 1991. The VetFran program has brought together over 450 franchisors to offer financial incentives, mentoring, and training to veterans interested in becoming franchise owners. On November 11, 2011, the IFA also launched Operation Enduring Opportunity through VetFran, an campaign to hire and recruit 75,000 veterans and spouses and 5,000 wounded warriors by 2014.

As the founders of VetFran, The Dwyer Group is proud of the support it offers veterans within its system, including with special vendor discounts and a quarterly newsletter for veterans. On a blog post, Dina Dwyer-Owens, CEO and Chairwoman of The Dwyer Group, commented, ?I am so proud of the VetFran program and not only what it has done to attract some of the best men and women to our franchise family, but also what it continues to mean for the their futures as business owners.? Having served our country to protect the very freedom under which we operate, it?s a gift to be able to extend those same business opportunities to veterans when their service is done. ?Welcome, friends!?

In its press release, IFA President Steve Caldeira commented, ?Military experience instills a ?just do it, failure is not an option? attitude. Those are exactly the kind of folks we want in franchising.?

In a special Memorial Day tribute to veterans, glass industry publication glassBYTEs featured the story of two Glass Doctor? franchise owners who are veterans. To read their stories about the transition from the military into franchising, click here.

More than 700 events nationwide anticipated for
USOC 2012 Olympic Day festivities

U.S. Olympic Committee announces record number of events for this year?s
celebration of Olympic Day

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In anticipation of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London, Americans are embracing the spirit of the Olympic Movement and making plans to host the largest Olympic Day celebration in U.S. history.

The United States Olympic Committee has received information for more than 700 registered Olympic Day events taking place nationwide between June 22 and July 1. The events are designed to engage youth and promote the ideals of the Olympic movement and will feature athlete appearances, family-friendly activities and interactive learning experiences. This year?s participation will almost double the U.S.?s 2011 event total.

USOC CEO, Scott Blackmun said the timing of 2012 Olympic Day is perfect for engaging Americans. ?The 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony is just over one month after Olympic Day, making these events a timely way to inspire Americans and educate our youth about healthy living,? Blackmun said. ?We are thrilled to host more events than ever before, and look to spread the excitement of the Games, Olympism and athlete stories of inspiration to even more people than in past years.?

Around the world, more than 160 countries take part in the annual celebration. Olympic Day was created by the International Olympic Committee in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games and celebrate the Olympic ideals and values that galvanize people in the spirit of Olympism.?In the U.S., Olympic Day events range from small gatherings to large, city-wide events.

Highlights of Olympic Day include:

  • Nationally, Free Race Day - USA BMX, in partnership with USA Cycling, will host a free race day at each of its 351 sanctioned tracks across the country and is expecting nearly 100,000 participants.? Events will take place in all 50 states.
  • New York City, NY, Learn to Skate with Sarah Hughes, Olympic gold medalist ? Sarah Hughes, who helped organize this event says, ?I?m looking forward to hosting an Olympic Day event at Chelsea Piers this summer and bringing the worldwide celebration of the Olympic Movement to my local community is especially meaningful. I know the Olympic values ? fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship ? will resonate with the kids, especially in the sporting environment at Chelsea Piers. Their enthusiasm, coupled with the excitement of the upcoming Games, is surely going to make Olympic Day an inspiring one for all involved.?
  • Sandy, UT, Soccer Training Session ? U.S. Soccer will host a special training session featuring the 2012 Olympic Women?s Soccer Team on June 30 at the Rio Pinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. Local and national Olympian skaters will join US Olympians Association President, Willie Banks, for an Olympic Day/?Skate to London? ceremony at RFK.
  • Milwaukee, WI, YMCA National Gymnastics Championship ? Olympic Day will be celebrated among 1,700 youth YMCA gymnasts from more than 20 states. • Red Lake, MN, Boys & Girls Club ? 2010 Olympic Curler, Natalie Nicholson, a local resident who is helping organize the event states, ?As a nurse practitioner, I am always encouraging my patients to be active, make positive lifestyle changes and have a positive outlook as well as set goals and not be afraid to fail. This community encourages me to be a better person and I think being involved with Olympic Day is a great way for me to give back and inspire the people of Red Lake.?

In 2011, 100,000 people participated in 376 events in the 311 cities which hosted Olympic Day celebrations in the United States.?Host organizations and cities joined more than 300 Olympians, Paralympians and hopefuls in proclaiming Olympic Day and celebrating Olympism in their communities.

Olympic Day events transcend sport and allow local athletes to be actively involved in their community and make a difference.?I hope to return to Joplin, MO, this year to celebrate Olympic Day during happier times,? said Jason Pyrah, two-time Olympian in track and field. ?Last year I was in Joplin two weeks prior to the Olympic Day event, volunteering with the tornado cleanup process. During the event, I met with the children from the Boys and Girls Club who were all affected in some way by the tornado.? We talked about the challenges they faced and it was fun to bring some much-needed excitement and a brighter outlook through the spirit of the Olympic Movement. It?s amazing how the Olympic Spirit can transcend sport and inspire people in their everyday lives.?That?s why I continue to participate in Olympic Day events in my communities every year,? said Pyrah.

To assist Olympic Day event hosts, the U.S. Olympic Committee offers planning toolkits, supplemental materials and help potentially securing an athlete for the event. Free Legal Question: Traffic Law | Virginia | My car got towed from ...

My car got towed from my apartment for having an expired tag. The police did not designate or notify the company for this towing. I don't believe I should have to pay the 150$s to get my car back because they are not a law enforcement official and therefor should not be enforcing the law. I can't go around enforcing the law and taking peoples money, so why should they be allowed to? Is this legal, or should I be able to fight them and get my car back without paying?
